Senior Community Outreach Specialist, Seattle Public Utilities

What: Seattle Public Utilities is seeking two outreach specialists to provide direct public engagement and outreach services for capital improvement projects (CIP). Each position will report to a Strategic Communications Advisor within SPU’s Corporate Communications Division.

Responsibilities:
• Develop communication plans, outreach materials, press releases and social media and web content
• Work with project teams to determine outreach objectives, timelines and budgets
• Research appropriate communications tactics, identify key audiences and key messages
• Track and report all project communication contacts and media coverage; compile and prepare summaries of public meetings and other outreach activities
• Evaluate and measure outreach results to ensure communications goals are achieved
• Ensure that the City’s standards for inclusive outreach and consistency in construction communications standards apply to all work
• Foster and facilitate collaborative relationships between project team members and stakeholders using the principals of systematic development of informed consent
• Monitor consultant contracts for compliance with terms and conditions
• Serve as liaison with other departments and agencies on project communications
• Provide back-up service in other areas of the agency when requested by the Communications Director or supervisor.

Requirements:
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Administration, Marketing, Journalism, English or a related field
Experience
Two years of professional experience in community outreach, marketing, journalism, or a related field involving strategic planning and preparation and distribution of public information materials
Equivalency
A combination of education, and/or training, and/or experience that provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.

Licensing and Other Requirements:
A Washington State Drivers license or evidence of equivalent mobility

Desired Qualifications:
• Experience working with stakeholder groups, special interest and community groups or governmental agencies
• Demonstrated experience with strategic communications planning including outcome measurement
• Experience in public speaking, facilitating public meetings, and organizing stakeholder groups
• Sound judgment and decision making skills and the ability to work with conflicting priorities
• Knowledge of public works project is a plus
• Working knowledge of Adobe graphics programs

• Ability to communicate and work effectively within a multicultural workforce serving a diverse customer base
