What: The Online Managing Editor is central to providing overall accuracy, timeliness and creativity of our online and mobile content. This position will work with the Director of Public Media to implement and ensure web standards and expand the delivery of our digital content. Work with KPLU news staff, independent news providers, and other KPLU staff producing content for the web page. Reports to the Assistant General Manager, Director of Public Media.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Monitor external sources of content and act as an editor and curator. Includes selection, revision and often repurposing of relevant content and associated media.
-Work across departments to edit materials, integrate text, still images, audio and video components, and links to relevant resources into an appealing and thoughtful online package.
-Stay abreast of new technologies in the world of web based news and current events in news, particularly in the northwest.
-Work with the Multi-Media Manager on the design and development of special projects and daily integration of content.
-Help to facilitate training so that KPLU staff has a thorough understanding of the requirements for copy, audio and images in the on-line environment.
-Maintain open communications with KPLU staff and foster a collaborative environment to benefit both the online and on-air products.
-Provide online content, in consultation with Director of Public Media.
-Oversee user feedback regarding on-line content and provide such feedback to the appropriate staff person or respond directly if feedback is more general in nature.
-Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
-Knowledge of all facets of online and mobile production, including web technologies, writing for web, editing, graphic design, HTML, photography and audio/video production.
-Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills. Demonstrated expertise in the mechanics of Standard English grammar and knowledge of AP style.
-Good design sensibility; able to communicate ideas to web development team.
-Understanding of news reporting and a commitment to integrity and good news judgment.
-Broad knowledge of regional issues and current events.
-Ability to track multiple projects, work under deadline pressure, communicate across departments, and respond effectively to diverse and challenging circumstances.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-3 years experience working in an online environment including writing for the web.
-Experience as a journalist with heavy emphasis on editorial development.
-Bachelor’s Degree required with major work in English, journalism, arts, humanities or new media desired.
-Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-Experience in Public Broadcasting.
-Experience with content management systems, social networking and content distribution.
-Experience in a mobile environment.
