Amazon’s ’08 Yule Rules

Seattle E-tail giant Amazon.com has reported record holiday sales for the period just ended, summiting a stellar historical trend which has seen the company steadily improve its holiday commerce for the 14th year in a row.

Amazon announced more than 6.3 million items were ordered worldwide and 5.6 million were shipped on December 15, its peak day for “a record-breaking 72.9 items per second”.

The E-King of King County said it shipped items to more than 210 countries between November 14 and December 24, and more than 99 per cent of its orders arrived in time for the Christmas holidays.

The best-selling holiday items this year included the Samsung 52-inch HDTV, the Apple iPod, the Acer netbook computer and the Nintendo Wii.

Barclay Capital analyst Douglas Anmuth said earlier this month that Amazon’s competitive position had actually strengthened during the economic downturn, as some brick-and-mortar retailers closed their shops and had difficulty obtaining inventory. [24×7]

Zooppa Incents User-Generated Ad Campaigns
Seattle-based social advertising venture Zooppa (http://www.zooppa.com) is the first to create a social space for the creation of user-generated advertising.

Founded in Italy, where the inspiration for Expedia and Avvo was born), Seattle will be the US launch for the service which invites consumers to product video, print, in short, full campaigns ads for brand marketers including such Seattle companies at Earth Class Mail, and earn a cash bounty. Former Corbis VP Wil Merritt will helm as CEO.

The timing for the launch of Zooppa into the American market couldn’t be better, said Merritt. “Zooppa offers brands the opportunity to get high quality creative campaigns through the open competition of a very talented online community.”

A revenue leader with a strong track record in sales and marketing at world-class companies, Wil Merritt builds cross-functional teams with creative strategic vision on a national as well as an international scale.

According to Riccardo Donadon, founder of parent incubator H-Farm, “I”m really excited that Wil Merritt has accepted the position with us. It is an honor to have him on board to launch Zooppa in America. His experience and passion for the advertising world is essential to expand Zooppa.” [24×7]
