Show Time for Digital Video

Television may be officially changing the channel from analog to digial on Feburary 17, but it’s the first weeks of January that dazzle the eye of technology watchers at the perennial showcases of the very latest in digital magic at The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and MacWorld in San Francisco. Among the big names expected at the Vegas show are Yoko Ono, IndyCar driver Danica Patrick, Kevin Costner, and Mary J. Blige. The biggest name in Macdom, Steve Jobs, will not be presenting at what could be Apple’s last officially-sponsored MacWorld show, this admist rumors of Job’s ill health.

Gaining rock ctar status as a CES keynoter on Wedensday will be Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer who is filling the shoes, if not the seats, of Chairman’s Bill’s standing room only status. Ballmer will be joined on stage by Robbie Bach, president of the MS Entertainment and Devices Division.

From multidisplay laptops (Lenovo’s dual-screen laptop is a sure show-stopper) and HDTVs wired for broadband to Blu-ray players that can deliver Web content, a major trend at CES this year is the merging of content delivery and hardware. LG will be showing off several LCD and plasma TVs with the built-in ability to stream Netflix online movies–no PC required. Yahoo and Intel will be showing prototype TVs with “widgets” that stream video from Hulu and YouTube, and display pictures from Flickr. Samsung will show a model with Yahoo widgets; we’re still waiting to hear from Samsung on whether the TV will support Hulu and YouTube streaming.
