Vulcan_LogoThis newly created position of Vice President, Marketing and Communications will oversee 3 key areas: Marketing and Branding, Communications, and Digital efforts.

While this position is focused on the work at Vulcan Inc. and the associated divisions of the portfolio, the position will coordinate with affiliate divisions.   This role will establish the core marketing functions at Vulcan. This includes marketing, media relations, social media, employee engagement and special events. The Vice President, Marketing and Communications not only creates and implements strategic messaging campaigns in order to effectively tell Vulcan’s story, but will provide expert advice to the Vulcan leadership to implement a narrative that aligns and supports Paul G. Allen’s objectives across a diverse set of interests and endeavors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy:

  • Establish core marketing functions and work to establish Vulcan’s brand, master narrative and amplify Vulcan’s growing efforts.
  • Develop and manage strategic marketing and communications campaigns for a diverse set of initiatives across Vulcan and its affiliates.
  • Develop a messaging strategy to continually enhance and protect Paul G. Allen’s interests and areas of investment.
  • Collaborate diligently throughout the organizations to ensure alignment and ultimate synergy of marketing and communications opportunities with particular emphasis on government affairs initiatives and philanthropic programs as the company’s needs grow globally.
  • Ensure the internal strategic communication plan includes the development and implementation of innovative tactics and programs to communicate the company’s business objectives, desired culture and values to employees.

Marketing: 

  • Lead the development of marketing strategy for all communication and creative for Vulcan brands. The primary goal is to enable the organization as a whole and divisions to reach their impact targets through increased awareness, and measureable impact.
  • Design a Vulcan brand strategy and provide guidance to affiliates to ensure message alignment across paid, earned, owned and shared channels.
  • Set the brand management strategy across various company and private projects and initiatives ensuring continuity and consistency.
  • Increase profile of Vulcan and divisions.   Leverage partnerships, sponsorships/sales, brand development/management of creative & operations, promotional planning, print & digital creative, media buying/planning, digital/social media efforts, and drive priorities.
  • Harness brand messaging across all Media platforms (network, digital and mobile). Serve as creative and strategic brand support for the Vulcan and affiliate partners.
  • Develop all strategic, creative, and promotional initiatives for core strategic initiatives including new launches.
  • Leveraging market research, develop and lead a strategy to support the business, real estate and creative projects, including demographic, lifestyle segmentation and consumer positioning research both domestically, and internationally.
  • Select, hire, and manage vendors and contractors across multiple disciplines including graphic design firms, public relations, advertising and marketing firms, freelance writers, photographers, event design, production vendors, transportation personnel, and more.

Communications:

  • Lead the communications and content development initiatives across diverse media platforms to ensure the positive public image of Vulcan, its affiliates, its projects and initiatives, and its top executives, reaching diverse external audiences at the international, national, regional and local levels.
  • Provide leadership on the development of a media relations strategy. Ensure coordinated media campaigns for Vulcan’s affiliates which include the creative, philanthropic, charitable and consumer projects of Vulcan Productions and the Seattle Cinerama Theatre, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, and its affiliated organizations (Allen Institute for Brain Science, Experience Music Project/SciFi Museum, and the Flying Heritage Collection)
  • Provide guidance and leadership for Vulcan spokespeople and executives.
  • Elevate Vulcan’s digital presence; leverage social media channels as appropriate.
  • Ensure that all special events, press conferences, promotional events, fundraisers, corporate parties, grand opening festivities, film premieres, are designed to support the vision and direction of the overall communication strategy

REQUIREMENTS:  The Vice President, Marketing and Communications must be an outstanding personal communicator with the stature and presence to represent Vulcan.  This individual will be a business executive and a world-class marketing and communications professional, as well as a motivator and leader. S/he must have outstanding strategic planning skills, a solid understanding of business relationships, and the knowledge, intellect and temperament to work at the highest levels in an organization. A high degree of personal initiative, as well as outstanding interpersonal, teamwork, listening, verbal, written communications and process facilitation skills are absolutes. Exhibit strong counseling and strategic skills with the ability to work in an evolving environment and balance the needs of various internal and external stakeholders; high tolerance for change and stress; flexibility and steady temperament.This person should be innately creative and flexible in nature. It is equally important that s/he have a hands-on approach. Absolutes are a proven ability to effectively manage strategic marketing and branding campaigns; a proactive, high-profile communications and media relations program, and the ability to make sound judgments and counsel management.Required is a bachelor’s degree, at minimum. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess prior experience inside an organization or with a communications or marketing agency and at least 15+ years of senior leadership experience in communications and/or marketing role. Prior experience leading an international communication strategy with an emphasis on global initiatives and philanthropic programs, is highly desired. This individual should be engaged in competitive market dynamics; design, implementation and measurement of strategic and tactical plans; budget management; the ability to direct and supervise teams, outside counsel and consultants; and the proven ability to counsel senior management. Candidates must possess strengths in marketing strategies and communications that support a high-performance environment and a proven track record of effective collaboration with executive management, peers and direct reports.
