Position: Full- Stack Web Developer

What: The College of the Environment at the University of Washington has an outstanding full-time opportunity for a Web Developer to support our communications by building and managing websites for the College and affiliated units.

This position will collaborate with other developers, designers, content specialists, and stakeholders to build websites, manage server resources, and enhance our content management approach and practices using WordPress. This position will also contribute their development expertise to other online marketing properties.

The position requires management of multiple deadlines, excellent communication skills, and has a responsibility to support the work of designers, content specialists, and website owners. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong development skills as well as an understanding of how content management workflow supports non-technical users and site owners.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with a small team of developers and designers to build and maintain a growing set of College and unit websites.
  • Manage, maintain, and improve content management systems and processes for college websites, including custom themes, plugins, content types, fields, workflow, and support. Map technical requirements and workflow to content strategy.
  • Manage Apache, PHP, MySQL, Shibboleth, and other development and server tools in a Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP (LAMP) environment. Coordinate with external server team on backups, updates and other issues.
  • Select, implement, and support web-based tools that enhance internal and external college communications.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, digital communications, or a related field. Equivalent experience can substitute for the degree requirement.
  • And three years of experience with the following:
  • Developing for WordPress, including custom themes, plugins, advanced configuration, and content workflow. WordPress knowledge plus strong expertise with a similar CMS will be considered.
  • Strong skills in PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript development.
  • Front-end development proficiency, including HTML5, CSS, and related concepts.
  • Experience managing MySQL databases, web server tools, and applications in a LAMP environment, along with a high-level of comfort working on the command line.
  • Experience coordinating website projects, including communication with partners and stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to explain development concepts to non-technical users.
  • Familiarity with user interface and user experience practices.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience working in teams.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
  • Experience with developer tools, including Git, Grunt, Gulp, Node.js, Bower, and Foundation.
  • Experience working with UW-specific technologies, including NetID authentication using Shibboleth.
  • An interest in environmental science and policy.
