What: “Managing Quality Debt in Practice, by Chris Sterling at Rally Software”

Software debt slowly creeps into applications and platforms when integrity is not asserted and verified on a frequent basis. Quality debt is a type of software debt that can be managed and monitored separately from the other types (technical, configuration management, design, and platform experience debt). This session will cover some processes and practices to help manage quality debt effectively such as: Acceptance Test-Driven Development Test-Driven Development Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD) The Three Amigos Pattern (common pattern titled by Bob Payne and George Dinwiddie) Push Button Release Asserting quality with Definition of Done Identify Quality Debt earlier with Tools and Dashboards.

“Inside the software test interview, by Alan Myrvold at Google”

Hiring great software testers is challenging. Alan Myrvold will discuss his experience interviewing and being interviewed for software testing roles, and provide nuggets of wisdom from other software testers and managers. Alan will explore common interview questions, including coding, test design, and the rare behavioral questions, and strategies for probing the knowledge of experienced testers.

Who:

Alan Myrvold is currently a test engineer on the Google cloud team. Previously, he helped test Google advertising platform products, including Google Display Network Ad Planner and DoubleClick Bid Manager. Prior to joining Google in 2011, Alan worked at Microsoft, Entrust and Cognos, focusing on security, automation and performance testing. His personal opinions on testing can be found at http://testapprentice.com. Alan earned a bachelor’s and master’s in mathematics (statistics) from the University of Waterloo.

Chris Sterling is Director of Engineering at Rally Software where he focuses on Agile Portfolio Management tools and processes along with helping managing our own software debt before it becomes a heavy burden. Chris is author of the book “Managing Software Debt: Building for Inevitable Change” and writes about his real world adventures in technology on the popular “Getting Agile” blog. As a trainer and speaker, Chris enlivens technical topics with his deep passion for software development and a touch of humor. In his spare time, he is a regular contributor to multiple open source projects.
