Medical Technology and its Impact on Women’s Health

As medical technology continues to evolve with the expanding use of 3D printers, AR and VR, how will this impact the assessment and treatment of women’s health? We will look at how the uses of technology will change the delivery of clinical assessment/treatments and the associated challenges. From the creation of single use devices personalized for patients, to the ability to download and analyze patient MRIs using AR we are seeing a revolution in the application of technology. How do we make use of the technologies available today to develop the tools to treat the medical needs of women?
We will also address the cultural issues affecting medical treatment for women. How do we overcome public perceptions/concerns about delivering emergency care such as CPR and Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in an era of heightened sensitivity? It’s about technology, it’s about culture and changing the dynamics of delivering medical care.

About the Speakers
Ryan James

Ryan James is Co-Founder and CTO of Pyrus, a medical technology company focused on simplifying the delivery of cardiac rhythm care, and a PhD candidate in Biomedical and Health Informatics at the University of Washington. His research focuses on understanding how virtual and mixed reality can improve medical practices. He has special interests in human computer interaction, full stack software architecture, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, and cardiac catheterization procedures. He received a B.S. in computer science from University of Michigan before working as a full stack developer for Microsoft for four years, where he learned the fundamentals of software design and development.

Paul Kostek

Paul Kostek is Senior Systems Engineer with Base 2 Solutions a Bellevue based consulting firm. Prior to joining Base 2 he was the Technology Project Manager for the Center for Research in Education and Simulation Technologies (CREST) at the University of Washington. CREST is part of the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine and develops virtual and physical training systems for medical training and patient education.
Paul works in the aerospace and medical industries and is Adjunct Faculty in the ECE Department at Seattle University.
He is Past President of IEEE-USA(1999), Past President of the IEEE Aerospace & Electronics Systems Society (2000-01) and Chaired the 2004 Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference, the 2006 IEEE/AIAA Digital Avionics Systems Conference and the 2011 and 2012 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference.
Paul received his BS from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.
