The Web Developer works with other web developers, web producers, designers, writers and internal customers to scope, design and build websites and functionality for Fred Hutch’s digital communications platforms. The ideal candidate has experience working throughout the web development stack. But what they like most is teaming with all levels of business users to share ideas, hone requests, and craft highly usable features and websites. The role includes work management for a small team of Fred Hutch web developers. The Web Developer partners with other IT and Fred Hutch groups to ensure smooth-running and highly-available digital properties. The position is in the Enterprise Applications Services group housed in Fred Hutch’s IT department.


  • HTML, CSS and JavaScript development
  • Collaboration with business stakeholders, web designers, content producers, and project managers to produce contemporary, high-performing websites
  • Identify and implement improvements and fixes for sustaining operations of Fred Hutch websites
  • Manage technical implementations of small- to medium-sized projects including testing and quality control
  • Create and maintain tracking and capacity plans, work backlogs, prioritization criteria and roadmaps. Use these products to maximize team efficiency, and ensure that internal stakeholders understand the projects, sustaining operations and administrative workload of the web developers and that work is sequenced according to approved priorities and effort required.
  • Employ modern project management methodologies in the building and maintenance of multiple web properties
  • Troubleshoot technical issues with various websites, content management systems and other platforms
  • Build or modify custom web applications
  • Support and enhance enterprise web content management systems
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with groups across Fred Hutch
  • Team with other IT groups to manage computer platforms that host multiple web properties.
  • Leverage analytics and system logging to deliver continuous improvement of websites and applications
  • Assist with creation and maintenance of web content


Expected Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or related area
  • 4+ years of web development experience
  • 4+ years’ experience with HTML, CSS and JavaScript coding
  • 2+ years’ experience with Java or other object-oriented programming language
  • Demonstrated experience translating designs and specifications into websites and other networked applications
  • 1+ year experience in a work-planning capacity, demonstrating collaboration and prioritization of work with multiple stakeholders

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience working at all levels of full-stack web development
  • Proficient in HTML, CSS and JavaScript coding
  • Responsive website development
  • Cross-browser and cross-platform website development
  • Experience working in a LAMP environment
  • Web content management system development and support
  • Optimizing websites for search engine performance
  • Familiar with social media, including related tools and integrations
  • Familiar with approaches to accessibility including Section 508 standards
  • Familiar with website performance and measurement tools such as Google Analytics or New Relic
  • Project management methodologies, such as Agile with Scrum and Kanban
  • Working in the software development lifecycle including requirements gathering, test, QA and release

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with modern web technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, CSS pre-processors (Sass or LESS), and JavaScript frameworks (React, Ember or Angular)
  • Proficiency in at least one object-oriented programming language (Java, C#, PHP, Ruby or Python)
  • Experience with basic database configuration
  • Adept with tools, protocols and other approaches for managing projects and technical teams
  • Code frameworks such as ZURB Foundation, including Sass
  • REST-based application development
  • Adobe Experience Manager (Adobe AEM) development, maintenance and upgrading
  • Code management tools such as git
  • Work tracking systems such as JIRA
  • Facility with graphic design tools such as Adobe Photoshop
  • Configuration of Apache web servers
  • Working with multiple Linux servers in a heterogeneous technical environment
  • Enterprise search such as Google Search Appliance
