Position: Full Stack Software Engineer

What: We are a flat, distributed, rapidly growing organization, with hundreds of Startup Weekend events, Startup Next pre-accelerators, Startup Digests and Reading Lists, and over twenty accelerators running throughout the year. As a Full-Stack Software Engineer, your day to day work will require a mix of supporting program operations, as well as building new software infrastructure to help our organization and community. You have experience in Agile, sustainable software development and deployment. Techstars utilizes a variety of technologies, and keeps an eye on products and tech that our portfolio companies create, for potentially incorporation into our platform. This is a full-time role for the Seattle, WA office.

Responsibilities:

As a full-stack developer, your day to day work could include any of the following:

Spec’ing out a new Ruby on Rails app to support Startup Weekend operations
Creating a Ruby script to run custom queries against a NoSQL database
Building an integration with a third-party JSON API
Working with a web designer to launch a new PHP microsite for Techstars.com
Creating D3 visualizations to feature in an upcoming blog post
Monitoring backend systems for performance and availability on New Relic
Fixing bugs at various layers of a Ruby on Rails application
Implementing a new RESTful JSON API endpoint
Our systems are built primarily in Ruby on Rails and JavaScript, but we aim to use the best tools for the job. We use several database technologies, including NoSQL solutions (MongoDB, Redis), as well as relational databases (MySQL, Postgres). We heavily utilize Open Source libraries, 3rd party APIs, and cloud infrastructure (DigitalOcean, AWS). We use GitHub for version control, and continuously test and deploy code to production. Some of our past projects were built using Python, Neo4J, and Google App Engine.

Requirements:

Minimum of 4 years’ experience in developing and scaling out web based applications (ideally utilizing Ruby on Rails framework)
Minimum of 4 years’ experience in using front-end web technologies, such as HTML5, JavaScript, jQuery, CSS
Well-versed in modern web application frameworks with experience consuming 3rd party APIs
Some experience with Ruby and interest in developing in this stack
Strong interest in the discourse competence around technology, startups, entrepreneurship, venture capital
You’re a self-starter who can prioritize, plan and execute even in the midst of uncertainty
Good communication skills – you can work collaboratively with other developers as well as fellow staff across the Techstars organization
You are someone who is motivated by building products that get used, not just pure technical execution
