Position: Temporary Lead Copy Editor

What: Headquartered in Seattle, WA, Apex Learning is looking for a bright, innovative and highly organized Temporary Lead Copy Editor to join the growing team. The Lead Copy Editor will be responsible for assisting the Managing Copy Editor in preparing written and web material for publication.

Districts are successfully using Apex Learning digital curriculum to meet needs ranging from credit recovery to original credit, from building foundational skills to creating opportunities for advanced coursework, and from distance learning to classroom-based programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Copy-edits and proofreads materials for Content Development, Marketing, and Product Management.
  • Ensures all content on every page within assigned material has no spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors.
  • Ensures written material is clear and consistent and adheres to Apex Learning style and tone.
  • Helps Managing Copy Editor oversee all copy editing and proofreading.
  • Reviews freelance copy editors’ notes and the material they have edited.
  • Offers thorough feedback to editors and Managing Copy Editor about effectiveness of freelancers’ work.
  • Provides regular reports to Managing Copy Editor about quality of writing and editing in each course and offers helpful feedback to producers and editors about how to best improve their work.
  • Juggles multiple assignments at once and meets all deadlines.
  • Prioritizes projects based on advice of Managing Copy Editor and Domain Leaders.
  • Manages all projects, deadlines, and invoicing in Managing Copy Editor’s absence.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university.
  • 3 years related experience and/or training.
  • Mastery of the Chicago Manual of Style required.
  • Must have thorough understanding of word usage, value concision and have strong attention to detail.
  • Must have a basic understanding of high school level math and science concepts in order to effectively edit related course content.
  • Must be able to review and follow the Apex Style Manual before starting work on Apex courses.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills required.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Ability to pass a Social Security Administration E-Verify check for U.S. work authorization.
