Hack For Justice 2020

In partnership with the justice and tech communities, UW Tacoma is hosting a Justice Hackathon that will bring students, innovators, and changemakers together to tackle criminal justice and reentry issues. For those who are new to Hackathons – they are intense brainstorming gatherings where people with different skills exchange ideas, form teams, and develop working prototypes – in this case, justice and tech.
Why Criminal Justice?
The criminal justice system is costly and far reaching. Approximately 136,000 Washington State residents were behind bars or under criminal justice supervision in 2018 and more than a million residents have a criminal record. For perspective, there are approximately 7.5 million people living in Washington State. Those who have been directly or indirectly impacted by the justice system are disproportionately affected by homelessness, unemployment, poor physical & mental health, lower education, and systemic & social oppression.
Who Should Attend?
Anyone! Show up, bring your laptop, and make a difference. We are structuring the hackathon so that anyone who has a passion for doing good/learning can contribute in some way. With that said, we especially invite students and professionals with coding skills or experience with the criminal justice system to attend.
