D4D Programming Night

January 8, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Come hang out with us and work on Data for Democracy projects!

Data for Democracy (D4D) was born as a remote organization, but due to the overwhelming response to the Hackathon we hosted here in Seattle (read about in Geekwire (http://bit.ly/2ouXWk6)), we are now hosting a weekly programming night for people to meet up, hang out, and play with data. Programming nights are intended to be working meetings and a time for D4D members to connect in-person; they have no set agenda and you are welcome to come and go during the evening.

Who should come to programming nights?

Everyone! Whether you are a veteran D4Der or just interested in what we do, please feel free to stop by, chat, and maybe even write some code. Work on your own projects, teach others your skills or learn new ones, whatever is your jam we’d be happy to support!

Who is Data for Democracy?

Data for Democracy is a global volunteer organization with hundreds of active members contributing to dozens of active projects remotely. The organization seeks to solve problems and explore questions related to the social good. The goals of the organization are:

• To produce objective, rigorous data analysis that keeps people informed and engaged, and supports them in forming independent opinions.

• To connect with communities and partners that contribute to positive social change, and help equip them with the tools and technology to support the work they are already doing.

• To produce tools and platforms for learners, researchers, professionals, and enthusiasts for their work that involves data.

• To make data science transparent and accessible to a wider audience, and create opportunities for passionate and socially conscious people to get involved with using data to serve the public good.

Check out our website for more info: http://datafordemocracy.org/

Who runs Data for Democracy?

The community does! Anybody who wants to contribute to making D4D better is highly encouraged to do so! Everything in D4D thus far has come from grassroots ideas proposed and pushed forward by a community member just like you and there’s always more room for improvement. Whether it’s starting a new project or proposing a new tool for the community to use, don’t hesitate to just go for it!

(Zach Mueller, George Richardson, and Jonathan Torrez are the D4D members who co-organize the programming night in Seattle.)
