Online Bookmaking Runs Afoul of the Law Rules States’ Supremes
Seattle-based Betcha.com was on the losing end of a bet it made with nine Washington state Supreme Court Justices. The Justices were unanimous that the Website was plainly illegal because “it arranged bets “from [sports], to political contests, to whether the moon would be full on a given night,” according to the court opinion, and took a percentage of the wager as a fee. Betcha had attempted to evade prosecution by adopting an unconventional method of taking bets which sometimes allowed losers the option not to pay up. A losing bettor had 72 hours to decide whether to pay up, with a denial of payment resulting in negative effects to the user’s “honor rating” on the website. State law makes online gambling and bookmaking fees illegal as does the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). [24×7]
