More ISP Ire

"OneMain is terrible.

We are a new-media design firm in Seattle, and we are in the process of replacing you because we can't get email for hours at a time at least once a week. This causes strife with our clients. Our clients pay us lots of money.

I've spent hours and hours on hold to be told only "The server's slow," which of course I knew. And then we're told "There's nothing we can do about it."

Well, there's something we can do about it. We can drop your sorry service and tell everyone we know on planet Earth that OneMain doesn't give a shit about its customers."--Anonymous

We won't pretend to be a Consumer Action SWAT Team, but we did cast an investigative look at this sorry case of end-user mistreatment. OneMain.com was acquired in September 2000 by Earthlink, the nation's second-largest Internet Service Provider (aka ISP). And Earthlink appears to be faltering, at least with dialup services, a market in which Microsoft and AOL continue to make big strides. So Earthllink is adding new subscribers by buying smaller ISPs, such as OneMain.com (not by building out its own services). Since EarthLink recently had a backlog of 50,000 customers waiting for DSL setup, the frustation evidenced above isn't likely to end soon. -- Larry Sivitz
