What's Brewing Week of 6.19.06 Surfing the Sound's Summer Tech Conferences The summer season of "tech-know"-conferences kicks off this week with the annual ITEC Conference and Exposition convening Wednesday at the Convention Center. The event offers up its own brand of Solution Finding on the trade show floor with over 200 exhibitors. [24x7] Amazon Selling Groceries Having tested a grocery site since May 25, Amazon has decided to venture forward into offering 15,000 nonperishable items, about half in organic products, everything from Kellogg's Special K cereal to StarKist's canned tuna and Tide detergent. "This is so natural for us," said Tracy Ogden, Amazon spokeswoman. "This is for the busy parents, suburban and urban, who want to load up on diapers and pasta." Amazon customers who order $25 or more or are members of the "Amazon Prime" free shipping program can get free standard shipping. Shoppers can buy items in single-serving portions, but many offerings are in bundle capacity, Ogden said. [24x7] Gates Leaving Day-to-Day Role Bill Gates will transition out of a day-to-day role at the company he founded by July 2008 in order to spend more time on his global health and education work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. After July 2008, Gates will continue to serve as the company's chairman and an advisor on key development projects. During the next two-year-transition period, Gates will work with chief technical officers Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie who will later handle his responsibilities. "This was a hard decision for me," Gates said. "I'm very lucky to have two passions that I feel are so important and so challenging. As I prepare for this change, I firmly believe the road ahead for Microsoft is as bright as ever." [24x7] Mpire names new CEO Mpire, the company that empowers the millions of people who buy and sell used and hard-to-find items online, has named Matt Hulett as the its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Hulett, who was previously a board member for Mpire, was most recently president of the corporate travel division of Expedia, Inc., the world's largest online travel company. A veteran of successful consumer Internet ventures, Hulett has a proven track record across diverse industries such as entertainment, travel, consumer and enterprise software.
